No class on 7 and 14 May.

What is Brazilian Zouk?

Brazilian Zouk is a partner dance from Brazil, grown from Lambada. Unlike its predecessor, it is slower, rounder, more expansive — and above all: open to interpretation.

We dance Zouk in 4/4 time to modern music with a Zouk beat. At the centre is not technique for its own sake, but the joy of movement, of music, of dancing with people. Zouk can be led from hair tip to little toe — top to bottom.

In the beginners course we learn the foundation: leading, following, trusting your own body. Later it opens — the monologue becomes a dialogue, both contribute, both can improvise, roles can shift. That's what makes Zouk alive.

We welcome everyone who wants to learn Zouk in Weimar — students of Bauhaus-Universität, Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt, and anyone from Weimar and the surrounding Weimarer Land region.

Joy of movement. Joy of music.

What drives me is wanting this dance to spread — because I find it beautiful and want to pass it on.

Who teaches

I'm Daniel — dancing since 1994, Zouk since 2013. Before and alongside: many partner dances — Ballroom/Latin, Argentine Tango, Bachata, Salsa, West Coast Swing, Rock'n'Roll — with performances in Formation dance (Ballroom/Latin) and Rock'n'Roll. Today Zouk is my movement — it gives me PERSONALLY more than all other partner dances combined.

My focus isn't on competition or perfect form, but on bringing people to the joy of movement. My goal: that you dare to just dance outside of class too — at parties, in the pedestrian zone, at home in the kitchen. Dancing is the interpretation of music with your own body. Nothing more and nothing less.

The Zouk community in Thuringia has its roots in Weimar: dancers from Erfurt and Jena met here on neutral ground to learn together, then built communities in their own cities. I co-built the community in Ilmenau (2014–2019), and have been teaching Zouk in Weimar since 2020.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I dance affordably in Weimar?

Zouk Weimar offers classes on a donation basis — pay what you can, including nothing. The offer is explicitly aimed at students too. No membership, no fixed course fee.

Where can I learn partner dancing as a beginner in Weimar?

Zouk Weimar is a good starting point — open classes on a donation basis, no prior knowledge needed, no fixed dance partner required. Register briefly via email or Instagram and just come along.

Do I need dance experience?

No. Zouk Weimar is explicitly open to complete beginners — people who have never danced before. We start from zero together.

What makes Zouk special?

Three things stand out. First: because it is danced in 4/4 time, it fits roughly 80% of the music you hear every day — you can use it anywhere, not just in dance class. Second: you learn one single dance, and after a beginners course you can already dance. Other styles (like Ballroom and Latin) teach you many different dances at once, which takes longer. Third: Zouk is the youngest of the globally popular partner dances. It is very modern.

What is Brazilian Zouk?

A partner dance from Brazil, grown from Lambada — slower, rounder, more expansive. Zouk is danced in 4/4 time and is musically very open: from R&B to classic Zouk music to modern sounds, sometimes even rock-influenced. Here in Weimar we dance it mainly to modern music with a Zouk beat — but Zouk itself is broader than that.

Do I need a dance partner?

No. Partners rotate regularly during class, you'll dance with different people. Coming alone is explicitly welcome.

Do I need to register?

Please do — briefly via email or Instagram. We're a small group (maximum 7 couples), and it's especially disruptive when new people arrive unannounced mid-session. Dropping in spontaneously is possible — but it really is better if we know beforehand.

What does the class cost?

Donation basis. Nobody is turned away.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move freely in. For your feet: flat dance shoes or thick socks — just nothing with rubber soles that stick to the floor.

Am I too old for Zouk?

No, Zouk works for any adult age group. What counts is the joy of dancing, not your age.

Am I too young for Zouk?

You're warmly welcome from age 16 onwards.

Am I too inflexible?

No. We all start from zero together. If you can stand and walk, you can learn Zouk.

What if I have no sense of rhythm?

Everyone has a sense of rhythm. Being completely outside of a beat is hardly humanly possible. Our heartbeat itself is a rhythm-keeper. What most people mean is more of a shifted beat — and that can easily be calibrated through dancing. What feels disruptive at first isn't a lack of rhythm, but overload: coordinating steps, leading arms, knowing what comes next, paying attention to your partner, and keeping the beat — all at once. That's a lot. After a few hours it sorts itself out.

How sensual is it really?

Zouk is built on consent. The follower determines the closeness — the leader can always create distance, because they lead. We explicitly teach how you as a follower can regulate proximity. Zouk can be danced at any distance — from several metres apart to close embrace. When danced close, it's by mutual agreement and as an interpretation of the music. Sensual sounds different in marketing than the dance actually is.

How do I get there from the Bauhaus campus?

By bike about 15 minutes from the main campus (Geschwister-Scholl-Straße). On foot about 25 minutes from Goetheplatz. By bus: Line 8, terminus Döbereinerstraße — right at the door. Alternatively Rödchenweg stop or Lützendorfer Straße, each 3–5 min walk.

Does the class run during semester breaks?

Usually yes. If a session is cancelled, we communicate that in advance. Otherwise the class runs year-round.

What happens on my first visit?

You show up, we welcome you, no preparation or prior knowledge needed. After the lesson there's time for social dancing — and there's usually homemade ice cream.

Is it a continuous course or stand-alone classes?

We build on content progressively, but each class stands on its own — especially for anyone who already knows Zouk and wants to refresh. If you want to start completely fresh, get in touch first: we'll figure out whether you can join the current course, whether a crash session makes sense, or when the next beginners course starts.

Is Zouk available in other Thuringian cities?

Yes — there are also Zouk communities in Erfurt, Jena, and Ilmenau. Dancers from Erfurt and Jena met in Weimar on neutral ground to learn together — and later built communities in their own cities, in Erfurt, Jena, and Ilmenau each through university sports programmes. Since 2020, Zouk is back in Weimar as well.

Who is behind Zouk Weimar?

Daniel Richter has been teaching Zouk in Weimar since 2020. He has been dancing Zouk since 2013 and teaching Zouk since 2014. Before and alongside: many partner dances (Ballroom/Latin, Argentine Tango, Bachata, Salsa, West Coast Swing, Rock'n'Roll), with performances in Formation dance and Rock'n'Roll. Co-builder of the Zouk community in Ilmenau (2014–2019). Lilly has also been dancing Zouk since 2013 and teaches in Weimar since 2023, taking over classes when Daniel is away.
